Beach shade buying guide — tents, chairs, and umbrellas

The right beach shade setup depends on how long you're staying, how many people you're with, and how much you want to carry. Here's how to choose.

Neso beach tents

Neso designed their beach tents specifically for sandy beach conditions — the problem with standard pop-up tents on sand is that stakes don't hold. Neso tents use an integrated sand anchor system: the poles push into the sand around the perimeter and fill with sand to anchor the tent without traditional stakes. The setup takes under a minute once you've done it once.

The Grande Tent is the standard model — enough coverage for two to three people, folds down to a compact bag that fits over one shoulder. Available in solid colors and prints. The Gigante Tent offers more coverage for families or groups, available in standard and print colorways. The Sidelines Grande is a combination of tent and chair — a hybrid for surfers who want one piece of gear to handle both.

Neso chairs

The Neso Chair is a low-profile beach chair designed to sit low to the ground — the right ergonomics for watching surf, spending time on the sand, and pairing with the Neso tents. The Chair XL offers more seat width and a higher weight capacity. Both fold compact and carry easily.

Beach umbrellas

A beach umbrella is lighter and faster to set up than a tent, and works well for shorter sessions or when you need just enough shade for one person. For all-day sessions with a family or group, the Neso tent is more practical — more coverage, more stable in coastal wind, and doesn't require repositioning as the sun moves.

Tips for beach shade in Southern California

Set up shade facing the ocean — morning sun comes from the east, afternoon sun from the west. For morning sessions at Venice or Santa Monica, shade angled slightly east keeps you covered through the peak UV hours. The marine layer burns off around 10–11am most summer days — that's when UV intensity spikes. Use your shade in combination with SPF 30+ sunscreen, not as a replacement.

Neso surfboard covers

Neso also makes surfboard covers in Short and Long versions — lightweight protective covers for boards during beach sessions and transport. Not a replacement for a board bag but useful protection for a board sitting in the sun on the beach.
