Kids' wetsuit buying guide
Kids' wetsuits should fit snug but not restrictive — a proper fit keeps kids warmer and is much easier to surf in than a loose suit. Size by height and weight, not age — children's proportions vary too much for age-based sizing to be reliable.
Kids' models we carry
O'Neill Youth Epic — the most popular kids' wetsuit. 100% UltraFlex neoprene, back zip entry. Easy to get on and off. Available in 3/2mm and 4/3mm. The back zip is the right choice for most kids — simple and fast to put on independently.
O'Neill Youth Reactor — entry-level springsuit and jacket range in 1.5mm and 2mm. Good for summer sessions and warm days. Front zip and back zip options.
O'Neill Youth Ninja — front zip entry in 3/2mm and 4/3mm. The Ninja front zip panel runs vertically down the chest and is very easy for kids to operate themselves.
Rip Curl Omega — Rip Curl's entry-level kids' suit. Back zip in 3/2mm.
Rip Curl Dawn Patrol — one step up from the Omega. Kids' sizes available in 3/2mm.
The WetChute — makes getting wetsuits on easy
Getting a wetsuit on is the hardest part for kids — neoprene grips skin and arms and legs get stuck. The WetChute is a simple nylon sleeve that you slip over a hand or foot before putting the suit on. The neoprene slides over the nylon instead of gripping skin, making the whole process smooth and fast. Kids can get themselves in and out of their wetsuit independently with a WetChute. We carry them at Rider Shack — ask at the counter.
Changing for kids — ponchos and mats
A changing poncho makes beach parking lot changes much easier for kids — pull it over their head, change underneath, and nobody gets a mouthful of sand. A changing mat protects bare feet from hot pavement. Browse changing ponchos and changing mats.
Sizing
Size by height and weight. Kids who run tall for their age should size up. See our kids' wetsuit size guide.
