Surfboard wax buying guide

Surfboard wax is the layer of grip between your feet and your board. Without it, your feet slip off the moment the board gets wet. Every surfer waxes their board — it's as fundamental as fins and a leash. The right wax for your conditions makes a real difference in grip, and applying it correctly makes it last.

Temperature rating — the most important factor

Surfboard wax is formulated for different water temperatures. Using the wrong temperature wax is the most common wax mistake — warm water wax in cold water becomes too hard and won't stick to your feet, and cold water wax in warm water melts into a slippery mess. Here's the breakdown for Los Angeles conditions:

Cold water (below 58°F / 14°C) — rare in LA but relevant for the coldest winter days. Cool water (58–68°F / 14–20°C) — the standard LA range for fall, winter, and spring. Warm water (68–75°F / 20–24°C) — late summer in LA when the Pacific warms up. Tropical (75°F+ / 24°C+) — for travel, not regular LA conditions.

For most LA surfers surfing year-round: a cool water wax covers the majority of sessions from October through June, and warm water from July through September. A basecoat applied before your temperature wax extends the life of both.

Sex Wax — Mr. Zog's Quick Humps

Mr. Zog's Sex Wax is the most recognized surfboard wax in the world. Founded in 1972 in Santa Barbara and surfed in lineups everywhere from Malibu to Mentawais. The Quick Humps formula is their main surfboard wax — available across all temperature ratings. Sex Wax uses a coconut-scented formula that has become as much a part of surf culture as the grip itself — the smell of Sex Wax is genuinely one of the most recognized scents in surfing.

Sticky Bumps

Sticky Bumps is the other major surf wax brand and Sex Wax's biggest rival in the market. Also available across all temperature ratings, with a comparable grip performance. The Day Glo Cool/Cold formula adds bright color to the wax — popular for the visual as much as the grip. The Sticky Bumps Wax Box and Comb combo is a practical kit for surfers who want storage and a comb in one purchase.

Sister Betsy's

Sister Betsy's is a smaller wax brand with two strong formulas in our range — the standard and the Black Label High Voltage. A good alternative for surfers who want to try something outside the two major brands.

Basecoat — do you need one?

A basecoat is a harder wax applied directly to the board before your temperature wax. It gives the temperature wax something to grip to and extends the life of your wax job significantly. Especially useful on epoxy boards where the smooth surface makes wax adhesion harder than on traditional PU. Apply basecoat first, let it set, then apply your temperature wax on top.

How to wax a board

Clean board first — remove old wax with a wax comb and wax remover before starting fresh. Apply basecoat in small circles across the entire deck area where your feet will go. Apply temperature wax in small circles over the basecoat, building up small bumps — it's those bumps that create grip, not a smooth coat. More bumps in the areas where your feet spend most time — the tail for your back foot, the center for your front foot. For longboards, wax the full length of the deck.

Wax combs, scrapers, and storage

Wax comb — the most essential wax tool. Rough up old wax between sessions to restore grip without full removal. The teeth side for combing, the straight edge for scraping. We carry the MR. Zog's Sex Wax Comb, Block Surf Flexcomb, Block Surf Wax Buddy (with bottle opener), and Wax Fresh Scraper.

Wax remover — Juice Wax Remover spray and Block Surf Fireball Wax Remover dissolve old wax for a clean start. Wax up in the sun first — warm wax scrapes off much more easily. Storage: the Sex Wax Storage Box and Creatures of Leisure Flexi-Tub keep your wax clean in the car.

Nose guards and accessories

Also in this collection: Surfco Hawaii nose guards (Diamond Tip, Wide Tip, Longboard) and tail guards — rubber protectors that prevent dings to the nose and tail during transport and crowded lineups. Block Surf Leash String and Surfco Hawaii Leash Plug for hardware needs.
