Side fins and quad rear fins buying guide
Side bite fins — for 2+1 setups
Side bites are small fins (typically 3"–4") that sit in the two outer boxes of a 2+1 setup alongside a larger single center fin. They add hold and control without changing the single fin's glide and trim character. If your longboard or midlength has one long center box and two small side boxes, you need a single fin plus a pair of side bites.
Side bites fit FCS, FCS II, or Futures depending on the board's side boxes. Check before buying. We carry side bites from Flying Diamonds, True Ames, Futures, FCS, and Roam.
Quad rear fins — for quad and 5-fin setups
Quad rears are the two smaller back fins in a quad configuration. On a 5-fin board, using quad rears with the four side boxes (center fin removed) gives you a full quad. On a dedicated quad board they are simply the back two fins. Quad rears are also sold as knubsters — very small trailer fins used behind twin fins on some shapes for a little extra control. We carry quad rears from FCS and Futures in medium and large.
When to buy rears separately
If you already have front fins and just need rears, or want to experiment with different rear templates, buying rears separately makes sense. For a complete matched set, browse 5-fin sets or quad fin sets.
