Single fins buying guide
Single fins are the classic longboard setup — one large center fin driving trim, direction, and pivot. They are used on traditional longboards in a standalone single fin setup, and in 2+1 configurations on midlengths and longboards alongside small side bite fins. Choosing the right template and size makes a noticeable difference in how a longboard handles.
FCS II and Futures single fins fit any standard longboard box
This is worth knowing before you buy: FCS II single fins and Futures single fins both fit standard US longboard fin boxes — the same long center slot found on most traditional longboards. You do not need a special box or adapter. Just drop the fin in and tighten the single screw. FCS II single fins add the screwless click-in option on top of that — they can also snap in without tools on boards with FCS II center boxes, but they work perfectly in a standard US box with the normal screw install. This means any longboard customer can use FCS II or Futures single fins regardless of what box their board has.
Single fin size guide
9"–10.5" — longboards 9'0" and longer, nose-riding and traditional logging. Large fins hold the board steady on the nose and draw out long flowing lines.
8"–9" — all-around performance longboarding on boards 8'6" to 9'6". Good balance of hold and pivot.
7"–8" — looser and more pivoty, for boards 8'0"–9'0" or surfers who want quicker turns and more tail slide.
5.5"–7" — midlengths, mini-logs, and shorter single-fin shapes. Also used as the center fin in some 2+1 midlength setups.
3.5"–5" — specialty sizes for smaller boxes, some soft tops and alternative boards.
Upright vs raked templates
Upright (less rake) — more pivot, looser feel. Good for nose-riding, smaller waves, and quicker turns off the tail. Raked (more sweep) — more hold, longer drawn-out turns. Better for speed, bigger surf, and directional trim at speed.

2+1 setup — single fin with side bites
Many midlengths and longboards run a 2+1 setup — one large center single fin combined with two small side bite fins. The center fin provides trim and direction; the side bites add hold when driving off the tail. Browse side bite fins to complete a 2+1 setup.
