Rashguards and sun shirts for surfers
A rashguard or sun shirt adds UPF protection, prevents rash from board wax and wetsuit edges, and keeps you cooler than bare skin in the sun. For surfers who spend significant time in the water without a wetsuit, a long-sleeve rashguard is one of the most practical sun protection choices available — more reliable than sunscreen alone and no reapplication needed.
How rashguards differ from sun shirts
Rashguards are designed for in-water use — tighter fitting, typically lycra or spandex construction, with flat-locked seams to prevent chafing against a wetsuit or board. Sun shirts are looser, more everyday wearable, and optimised for UV protection on the beach and paddling without a wetsuit. Both provide UPF 50+ protection in most cases.
