Surfboard traction pads buying guide

A traction pad — tail pad or deck grip — sticks to the tail of your surfboard and gives your back foot grip through turns. The raised kick tail helps your foot find position instinctively. Most performance shortboard and fish surfers use a traction pad on the tail.

Piece count: 3-piece vs 2-piece vs 4-piece

3-piece — the standard. Three sections positioned around your fin boxes for a custom fit. Almost all pads in our inventory are 3-piece. 2-piece — simpler installation, fewer alignment decisions. Good for wider tails or surfers wanting a cleaner install. 4-piece — maximum flexibility in placement. Used on some Firewire and Channel Islands signature pads.

Kick tail styles

Round tail pads — for round and squash tail boards. Square/flat tail pads — for squash, square, and bat tails. Check the pad's listed tail compatibility against your board's tail shape before buying.

Installation tips

Clean the deck thoroughly — no wax, salt, or oil. Position sections 1"–1.5" from the tail edge, centered between the fin boxes. Press firmly from center outward to remove air bubbles. Allow several hours to cure before surfing.

Do you need a traction pad?

Traction pads are most useful for shortboard and performance fish surfing. Many longboarders prefer wax across the full deck for foot movement freedom. Soft tops don't need a pad — the foam deck provides natural grip. Browse surfboard wax if you prefer wax.
