Thruster fins buying guide

A thruster — three fins with two sides and a smaller center fin — is the standard performance fin setup. The outside fins grip and drive; the center fin provides control and a pivot point. Thrusters work well in most conditions and are the baseline for shortboard surfing.

FCS II vs Futures thruster fins

Your fins must match your board's fin boxes. FCS II boxes have a small oval slot with two inserts; Futures boxes are longer rectangular slots. We carry a full thruster range in both: FCS and FCS II thruster fins and Futures thruster fins.

Size guide

Small (~55–70 kg / 120–155 lbs) — lively and releasing. Medium (~65–80 kg / 145–175 lbs) — most versatile, best starting size. Large (~75–90 kg / 165–200 lbs) — more hold and drive. XL (over 85 kg / 190 lbs) — maximum drive. When in doubt, go medium.

Thruster vs quad — when to switch

If your board has a 5-fin box you can remove the center fin to run a quad — more speed in small or hollow waves. Add it back for a thruster when conditions call for more control. Browse quad fins and 5-fin sets.

Brands we carry

FCS (Yago Dora, H4, Kolohe Andino series) and Futures (P6 Legacy HC, John John Grom Honeycomb) are our primary thruster brands, with Endorfins, Firewire, and Roam also available.
