The Lost RNF 1996 is a throwback-inspired, modernized fish that blends speed, flow, and a surprisingly high-performance edge. This 5'8" x 20.25" x 2.48" (32L) version is a sweet spot for surfers who want a fast daily driver that trims effortlessly, flies through sections, and still holds a clean line when you push it harder.

Fast, Flowy, and Ready to Rip

The RNF 1996 keeps the skatey fun of a fish, but with the control you want when the surf stands up. It’s an easy board to love when you want speed without feeling locked into one style—trim, carve, or open it up and let it run.

Why This Board Works So Well

  • Speed on demand: A fish-inspired outline built to generate and maintain glide.
  • More control than a classic fish: Designed to handle a broader range of conditions with confidence.
  • 32L usability: Plenty of foam for quick wave entry and easy momentum.
  • Futures compatibility: Set it up how you like with the right fins for your feel.

Fin Setup Tips: Thruster vs. Twin + Trailer

The RNF 1996 is known for being adaptable. With Futures boxes, you can fine-tune it to match your local waves and surfing style.

  • Thruster: The most predictable, “shortboard familiar” feel—great for tighter arcs, extra hold, and more confidence when the wave gets steeper or more powerful.
  • Twin + trailer: Faster and looser with that classic fish glide, while the small trailer fin adds control so it doesn’t feel too slippery when you push through turns.

Note: Fins are not included, so you can choose a Futures thruster set or a twin + trailer combo that matches how you like to surf.

Who This 5'8" / 32L RNF 1996 Is For

  • Surfers who want a fast, forgiving daily driver with fish-inspired speed
  • Riders who like experimenting with thruster or twin + trailer feel
  • Anyone looking to make average surf more fun without giving up performance potential

FAQ: Lost RNF 1996 5'8" (32L) Futures

Are fins included with this board?

No—this board is listed as fins not included. It uses a Futures fin system, so you’ll want to choose a Futures thruster set or a twin + trailer setup depending on the feel you want.

What’s the difference between running it as a thruster vs. a twin with trailer?

Thruster gives you a more planted, controlled feel for tighter turns and more hold. Twin + trailer feels faster and looser with extra glide, while the trailer adds a touch of stability so it stays confident through turns.

What kind of waves does the RNF 1996 work best in?

It’s a great “everyday” board for small to solid surf, especially when you want speed through sections. It can handle better waves too—fin choice and your approach will tailor how locked-in it feels.

Is 32L enough volume for easy paddling?

For many surfers, 32L in a 5'8" offers a nice balance of float and responsiveness. It’s designed to feel user-friendly for wave entry while still staying lively once you’re up and riding.

Do I need a special fin set to run twin + trailer?

You’ll want a Futures-compatible twin set plus a small trailer fin. This combo is popular on the RNF 1996 because it keeps the board fast and playful while adding control when you put it on rail.
