Modern Surfboards buying guide

Modern makes surfboards with a focus on accessible performance — shapes that work well across a range of skill levels and conditions without requiring specialist surfing to enjoy. They are strong in midlengths and longboards, with shapes designed to paddle well and turn well for everyday surfers.

Modern model guide

TheFalconis the centrepiece of the Modern lineup and the majority of our Modern inventory — available in a range of sizes. It is a performance midlength thruster available in 7'0"–7'6" in FCS II and Futures. The Falcon is designed for surfers who want a midlength with genuine performance capability — it turns well for its size and paddles early without feeling like a funboard. A strong choice for surfers stepping down from a shortboard who want more wave count, or progressing surfers who want to improve their surfing on a longer board.

TheDouble Wideand Double Wide X2 are wider, more volume-forward midlength shapes — more forgiving than the Falcon and better suited for surfers who want an easy-paddling everyday board. The Love Child is a 2+1 or single-quad midlength for surfers who want more glide and trim rather than tight performance turns.

The Highline 2.0 is Modern's performance shortboard — available in PU (ES stringerless epoxy) and standard construction in 6'0"–6'9". The ES version uses an epoxy soft deck construction (hard epoxy bottom, foam deck and rails) — more durable and forgiving than standard fiberglass with similar performance. The Retro and Golden Rule are Modern's longboard shapes, running single fin setups.

Modern construction — PU, epoxy, and ES

Modern boards come in several constructions. Standard fiberglass (PU) is the most common across the midlength range. The Highline 2.0 ES uses epoxy stringerless construction with a soft foam deck and rails — hard epoxy bottom for performance, foam surface for durability and comfort. Always match your repair resin to the board's construction — epoxy resin for epoxy boards, polyester for PU. Browsesurfboard repair kits.

Modern FAQ

What is the best Modern board for a progressing surfer?

The Falcon is the strongest all-around choice — performance midlength that paddles well and turns well without being a pure funboard. If you want more volume and forgiveness, compare the Double Wide.

What is the Modern Highline 2.0 ES construction?

The ES (epoxy stringerless) version has a hard epoxy bottom with a soft foam deck and rails laid over the top. More durable than traditional fiberglass and more comfortable for longer sessions, while still surfing like a proper shortboard.
