Lewis surfboards buying guide

Lewis is a local Santa Monica shaper who builds boards the way a local should — with deep knowledge of the breaks he shapes for. He surfs Malibu, Venice, El Porto, County Line, and the rest of the LA coast regularly, and that shows in his shapes. His boards are built for the kind of surf most LA surfers actually ride: waist-to-overhead beach break, crumbly point waves, and the occasional punchy south swell.

What Lewis builds

Lewis focuses on fish, midlengths, and longboards — the board types that work best for the majority of Southern California surf conditions. His shapes emphasize volume and paddle power, which means more waves caught per session without sacrificing the ability to turn and feel the board under your feet. All Lewis boards are hand-shaped fiberglass construction — traditional craftsmanship with no shortcuts.

The Lewis approach to volume

If you have been surfing shortboards and struggling to catch waves at average LA beach breaks, a Lewis midlength or fish will change your sessions. His shapes carry volume in the right places — through the chest and rails — so the board paddles and planes without feeling bloated. Fin setups across the range cover single fins, single with side bites, twin fins, and quad, depending on the shape.

Models in the lineup

The Pin Longboard (9'0"–9'7") is Lewis's traditional single-fin log — drawn-out pin tail for hold and trim. The Hull is a displacement-hull midlength — a more specialized shape for surfers who want a hydrodynamic feel different from a standard flat-bottomed board. The Mid and Long Fish cover the 7'0"–7'11" range in fish-influenced mid shapes with twin fin and quad options. His fish range covers 5'6"–6'4" in traditional fish outlines with twin and quad setups.

Fin setups on Lewis boards

Lewis boards use Futures fin boxes across most of the range, with some models using a US longboard box for the center single fin. Fin setups include single fins, single with side bites, twin fins, and quad depending on the shape. A small number of boards have glass-on fins — fixed fins that are part of the board's construction and not removable. Browsesingle fins, twin fins, quad fins, andFutures fins.

Support a local craftsman

Lewis also makes t-shirts — a small run of designs that reflect his personality and the LA surf scene. Picking up a Lewis board or a Lewis tee at Rider Shack is a direct way to support a working local shaper who builds boards by hand in Santa Monica.
