Thunderbolt surfboards buying guide
Thunderbolt builds high-performance epoxy surfboards with some of surfing's most respected shapers and surfers behind the designs. All Thunderbolt boards are epoxy construction — lighter and stronger than traditional fiberglass, with good flex characteristics that hold up well over time.
Harley Ingleby HIBT series
The HIBT (Harley Ingleby By Thunderbolt) series is the main Thunderbolt range. Harley Ingleby is one of Australia's most accomplished big-wave and high-performance longboard surfers, and his shapes reflect that — they are built to perform in real surf, not just look good on a rack. The HIBT 3+3 Full-Nose model comes in sizes from 5'10" all the way to 7'2", bridging the gap between a performance shortboard and a true midlength. Fin setup varies by model — the 3+3 series runs a 5-fin box for thruster or quad versatility. Longer Harley Ingleby shapes like the Diamond Drive 2.0 run single fin or 2+1 setups for traditional longboard performance.
CJ Nelson Designs
CJ Nelson is one of the most progressive performance longboarders in the world, and his Thunderbolt shapes reflect that commitment to high-performance longboarding. The Colapintail is a notable model — a mid-length shape with a distinctive pintail for drawn-out, rail-driven surfing. CJ Nelson boards use FCS II boxes and run single fin or 2+1 setups.
Epoxy construction
All Thunderbolt boards use epoxy construction — lighter than PU fiberglass, more durable, and with a lively flex that works especially well under foot in longer shapes. Epoxy boards also float higher and paddle faster than equivalent PU boards, which helps in longer midlength and longboard shapes. Use epoxy resin for any repairs — see oursurfboard repair kits.
Fin setups across the Thunderbolt range
Thunderbolt midlengths span the full range of fin configurations: 5-fin box (thruster or quad), single with side bites, single fins, and single with quad rear. FCS II is the dominant fin system across the range. BrowseFCS and FCS II fins, single fins, andside bite fins.
