Surfboard Consignment

Sell, Trade, or Consign Your Surfboard at Rider Shack

Got a surfboard you’re ready to part with? Rider Shack makes it easy to sell, trade, or consign your surfboard through a local, family-run surf shop with strong in-store and online reach. We’re based in Los Angeles but have shoppers browsing our used boards and new surfboards both locally and from all over the world.

Whether you want quick cash, store credit toward your next board, or a simple way to get your board in front of serious buyers, our program is designed to keep things fair, transparent, and easy.

Three Ways to Move On From Your Board

1. Consign Your Surfboard

Consignment is the best option if you want to get the most value out of your board without dealing with listing, messaging, and meetups yourself. You drop your board off with us, we handle the rest.

Our consignment commission options:

  • 35% commission if you choose to cash out when your board sells (with a $75 minimum commission).
  • 25% commission if you take your payout as Rider Shack store credit (with a $50 minimum commission).

We’ll work with you to set a realistic price range and do our best to obtain the highest reasonable price for your board. We will not go below the minimum price you approve unless we’ve talked with you first.

2. Trade In Your Board

If you’re ready to upgrade your quiver, a trade-in can be the fastest route. Bring your board in during business hours and our staff will evaluate it on the spot.

Trade-ins are handled on a case-by-case basis, and we’ll offer you store credit based on the board’s condition, brand, demand, and resale potential. Many riders use this credit toward one of our new surfboards or something from our Used Surfboards collection.

3. Sell Your Board Outright

Prefer a quick, clean sale? In some cases we may offer to buy your board outright. Like trade-ins, these offers are made case by case after an in-person evaluation. Bring your board into the shop any day we’re open and we’ll let you know what we can do. If we buy your board, you can walk out with cash or turn around and put it toward a brand-new board or a different used shape.

Boards We Can and Cannot Accept

To keep our used rack high quality and surf-ready, we’re selective about what we take in on consignment.

We generally accept:

  • Shortboards, longboards, mid-lengths, fish, and soft tops in good, rideable condition
  • Boards without major structural damage
  • Boards that are clean and presentable for resale

We do not consign:

  • Buckled boards
  • Boards with major damage (e.g. severely damaged fin boxes, significant open dings, or serious structural issues)
  • Boards we believe are unsafe or not reasonably saleable

If your board needs minor repairs before selling, consider using our professional ding repair service. A small repair can dramatically increase your board’s resale value and make it easier to sell or trade in.

Why Selling Your Board With Rider Shack Is Easier

When you consign or sell your board through Rider Shack, you’re tapping into a lot more exposure than just a single marketplace listing:

  • Established core surf shop: We’re a well-known, family-run shop with years in the LA surf community.
  • High in-store foot traffic: Your board is displayed in our retail store, seen by surfers 7 days a week.
  • Online exposure: We list consigned boards on our website, which receives traffic from surfers locally and globally.
  • Local marketplaces: We also include your board in our local online marketplace listings when appropriate.
  • Knowledgeable surf staff: Our team knows boards and can help match the right buyer to your board, answer questions, and guide people toward your listing.

Listing Fee & What We Do for You

To get your board ready and well-presented, we charge a $35 listing fee. This covers:

  • Removing wax and cleaning the board for photos
  • Taking quality photos in-store
  • Creating a detailed online listing on our website
  • Posting your board to other online outlets as needed

The $35 listing fee is waived when your board sells.

If your board does not sell, or you decide to pick it up and end the consignment, the $35 listing fee is due when you pick up your board.

Basic Consignment Terms

When you consign a surfboard with us, you’ll sign a short consignment agreement in-store. A few key points from that agreement:

  • You are the legal owner of the board you’re consigning. We reserve the right to request valid ID and record your contact information.
  • Stolen goods will be reported: Any suspected stolen items will be reported to the police along with the information provided.
  • Pricing: Together we’ll set a high and low price range for your board, and we’ll aim to get the best reasonable price within that range.
  • Damage responsibility: Rider Shack is not responsible for damage that may occur while the board is in our possession.
  • Listing fee: The $35 listing fee applies as described above and is waived when the board sells.
  • Commission options: 35% (cash payout) or 25% (store credit), with minimums.
  • Ending the agreement: Either party may end the consignment at any time. Once ended, you have 48 hours to pick up your board and pay the listing fee if applicable.
  • Abandoned boards: Boards left for 75 days with no communication after attempts to reach you may be considered abandoned.

How to Get Started

The easiest way to get started is to bring your board into Rider Shack during business hours. Our staff will:

  • Evaluate the board’s condition
  • Recommend whether consignment, trade-in, or buyout is best
  • Discuss pricing expectations
  • Complete the consignment agreement if you choose that route
