Used surfboards buying guide
Used surfboards are one of the best ways to get on a quality board without paying new-board prices. A well-chosen used board can be perfect for progressing surfers, surfers testing a new shape, anyone building out a quiver on a budget, or beginners who want a real board after outgrowing a soft top.
At Rider Shack, used boards are selected and inspected by actual surfers. We look at construction, prior repairs, pressure dents, fin box condition, rails, tail, and nose before a board goes on the rack.
Shop used surfboards by type
Used shortboards are great for surfers who want performance without paying full new-board pricing. Most used shortboards have FCS II or Futures fin boxes in thruster or 5-fin configuration. Used fish boards are ideal for testing twin-fin, quad, and alternative outlines before committing to a new shape.
Used midlengths offer a lot of board for the money — paddle power, glide, and smooth turns at a lower price point. Used longboards are best for wave count, trim, and mellow point or beach-break days. Used soft tops can be a smart choice for beginners, kids, or surf lessons.
What to check on a used surfboard
Pressure dents are normal on used boards and not a dealbreaker. What matters more:
Fin boxes — check for cracks, wobble, or misalignment. Replacing a fin box is expensive and can affect performance. Check that the board's fin system is what you expect (FCS II, Futures, or US box for longboards).
Open dings and water damage — run your finger over any dings. If the fiberglass is cracked, water has likely gotten in. A waterlogged board loses performance and is harder to repair properly. Brown or yellow foam discoloration is a sign of water intrusion.
Buckles and fold marks — a crease or buckle across the deck means the board was close to snapping. Avoid these. Delamination — soft, bubble-like spots where the fiberglass has separated from the foam. Minor delam is repairable; major delam is not worth buying.
If a used board needs minor ding work, our surfboard repair service can help. For a full inspection checklist, read How to Buy a Used Surfboard.
Fins for used boards — checking the system
Used boards often come without fins — especially shortboards and fish boards. Before adding fins to your budget, confirm whether the board's fin boxes are FCS II, original FCS, or Futures. FCS and FCS II are not fully interchangeable — FCS II fins can be used in original FCS boxes with an adapter, but original FCS fins don't fit FCS II boxes without an insert. Browse FCS and FCS II fins, Futures fins, and single fins for longboards.
Leash and accessories for used boards
A used board in good condition still needs a leash sized to the board length. 6' for shortboards and smaller fish, 7' for midlengths and longer fish, 8'–9' for longboards. Browse surfboard leashes. For wax, see surfboard wax. For any ding work the board needs, visit surfboard repair.

Used surfboards FAQ
Are used surfboards good for beginners?
Yes — if the board has enough size and volume and is in good condition. Most beginners do best on a soft top, longboard, or midlength. A used board in one of these categories can be a smart, budget-friendly step into real surfboard riding. Read A Guide to Buying Your First Surfboard for more guidance.
How much should I spend on a used surfboard?
Most used surfboards at Rider Shack range from $150 to $600 depending on condition, brand, size, and construction. Used shortboards and fish boards tend to be on the lower end. Used longboards, premium brand shapes, and lightly used boards run higher.
Can I trade in my current board at Rider Shack?
Yes — stop by any day for an assessment. We buy boards outright, offer trade credit, and accept boards on consignment. See our surfboard consignment page for more details.
